Daniil Medvedev v Marin Cilic Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before – this will be the first meeting between the world number ten and the man currently ranked seven places below him by the ATP.

Medvedev Continues to Impress on Hard Courts

World number ten Medvedev continues to impress on hard courts, a surface on which he had an unparalleled record in 2018 – no man in 2018 won more matches on hard courts. And he has continued that form into 2019, winning his 4th ATP career title in Sofia, Bulgaria in February, and reaching the final in both Brisbane and Barcelona, as well as the semis in Monte Carlo and Queen’s.

Now he has an excellent chance of reaching another final, as he is the highest ranked player left in the bottom half of the draw, especially as he has been relatively untroubled so far this week. He beat the American wildcard Bjorn Fratangelo with ease in the second round and then, on Thursday, saw off the challenge of another local player, Frances Tiafoe, in straight sets.

He has never won a senior title on American soil, but must rate his own chances of putting that mission right this week highly.

Cilic Showing Encouraging Glimpses of Form

For a man who was ranked in the top three in the world last year, 2019 has been a big disappointment for Cilic so far. He began the year well enough, getting to the fourth round in Wimbledon, but then went on a terrible run, losing in the first round in Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami, and then suffering early exits in Monte Carlo and Budapest.

When he did find some form again by reaching the quarter-finals in Madrid, illness prevented him from taking part in the match and he had to quit the tournament. Since then, results have reverted to norm, and he suffered disappointing results at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Queen’s, where he  had been defending champion.

However, perhaps there are some green shoots of recovery now appearing. He was made to struggle to beat Marius Copil of Romania in the second round, winning in two sets that both went to tie-breaks, but was far more impressive on Thursday, beating the highly talented Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime surprisingly comfortably.

Medvedev v Cilic Predictions & Tips

With all due respect to the other matches involved, this is the pick of the quarter-finals in Washington. Medvedev is the odds on favourite to win this match at 69/100, whilst Cilic is priced at 119/100. This may well be a tight match, but Medvedev is the man in better form and should edge it in the end.

Tip: Medvedev to win in three sets: 6/4 (888Sport)
