Nick Kyrgios v Norbert Gombos Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, two years ago at the Marseilles Open on indoor hard courts, with the Australian winning that match in straight sets.
Kyrgios, Controversial Australian Shines in Washington
Kyrgios continues to infuriate and enthrall tennis fans at the same time. One of the most naturally gifted players on the circuit, he has under-performed compared to his talent because by, his own admission, he does not train as hard or take the game as seriously as men like Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal, players who have been on the end of some of his outspoken outbursts on a number of occasions.
Yet, when he does put his mind to it, Kyrgios can compete with the best, as he showed in April when he won his 5th ATP career title in Acapulco.
Fortunately for his many supporters, he has decided to concentrate on his tennis this week, and has cruised through to the quarter-finals, defeating Gilles Simon of France in straight sets in the second round, and then the Japanese player, Yoshihito Nishioka, by the same margin on Thursday.
Of course, being Kyrgios, he is never far from controversy, and his match with Simon was marred by a clash with umpire Fergus Murphy, a man with whom he has a history of bad blood. As often is the case, the most difficult opponent Kyrgios has to face on court is usually himself.

Gombos was not originally scheduled to take part in this tournament at all, being drafted in as a lucky loser at the last minute when the number four seed Kevin Anderson was forced to withdraw from the event with a knee injury.
Yet the world number 122 has taken full advantage of his opportunity, first by beating the experienced Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in straight sets, and then battling past the Serb teenager, Miomir Kecmanovic, in three sets, a man ranked some sixty places above him in the world rankings.
This will be his first senior ATP quarter-final, but his challenge should not be taken too lightly as he is a man in form, having won two Challenger titles recently, in Bratislava in June, followed by Winnipeg last month.
Kyrgios v Gombos Predictions & Tips
Kyrgios is the overwhelming odds-on favourite to win this match at 3/20, whilst Gombos is priced at 99/20. Gombos has done very well to capitalise on his opportunity this week, but if Kyrgios plays anywhere near his potential, and can keep his emotions in check, he should win easily.
