Daniil Medvedev v Peter Gojowczyk Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in the Shanghai Challenger event in 2015, with the Russian coming from behind to win a tight match 6-4 in the third set.

Medvedev Looking for First American Title

World number ten Medvedev has already reached three finals this year – he won his 4th ATP career title in Sofia in February, and was the runner-up in Brisbane and Barcelona. Now he looks set to make his fourth, and a chance to claim what would be his first tournament win on American soil.

His progress has been relatively serene this week, having reached the semi-finals without having dropped a set. A comfortable win over American wildcard Bjorn Fratangelo in the second round, was then followed by an equally straightforward victory over another local player, Frances Tiafoe, in the third.

World number 17 Marin Cilic posed more of a challenge in the quarter-finals, but Medvedev was more than equal to it, out serving his opponent by 19 aces to four. In fact so dominant was he on serve that he did not face a single break point against it in the entire match.

Gojowczyk Defying The Odds and The Seeds

Gojowczyk has had the best tennis week of his year so far in Washington, having previously failed to win more than a single match in any tournament in which he has competed. Yet the man who won his solitary ATP career title at the Moselle Open in 2017 has defied all the odds to reach the semi-finals.

His week did not start in such promising fashion, and he just scraped past Andrey Rublev of Russia in his opening round match, courtesy of a third set tie-break. Things have got better since. First he defeated the number twelve seed Alex de Minaur of Australia in straight sets, and, more impressively, repeated that feat against big serving Canadian Milos Raonic, seeded eight.

And then he reached the semi-finals by coming from behind to beat the number nine seed, Kyle Edmund on Friday.

Not a bad week’s work for a man who only gained entry to the tournament after Bernard Tomic of Australia withdrew from the event.

Medvedev v Gojowczyk Predictions & Tips

Medvedev is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 3/13, whilst Gojowczyk is priced at 43/10. The Pole has had a great run in Washington, but it is hard to see him upset the odds yet again, given that Medvedev is a man in form playing on his favourite surface.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 1/2 (888Sport)
