John Isner v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

Isner and Thompson have met on two occasions, with the experienced American triumphing in both matches (most recently in the quarterfinals in New York in 2019).

Isner Finds Extra Motivation Playing In Home Continent

Despite experiencing a largely lean year on tour by his standards due to a stress fracture he suffered at the Miami Open final, John Isner is still looking assured of resurrecting his 2019 season.

The veteran American collected his first title of the season at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport and subsequently became the first man to win four titles at the lawns of the only professional grass-court tournament in North America.

However, Isner’s record outside his home continent does not make for pretty good reading (albeit having played in fewer tournaments). He won only one match (first round win over Casper Ruud at Wimbledon) outside North America, losing in the first round of Auckland and Australian Open, and then shockingly falling to Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round at SW19.

This will be Isner’s fifth tournament since breaking his left foot at the Miami Masters. And while the aforementioned injury hasn’t allowed the 34-year-old to back up his career-best 2018 season to consolidate his place in the top-10, he is looking refreshingly fit to compete at the Rogers Cup.

Thompson Has Excelled On Tour In 2019

Jordan Thompson is putting together a banner year on tour in 2019. After winning just one tour-level match in the whole of the 2018 season, the Australian is heading to Montreal on the back of a remarkable 22 victories on tour, including significant upset wins against the likes of Karen Khachanov, Alex De Minaur and Frances Tiafoe.

Thompson won 52 matches at Challenger level last year, which was the second most in history and he has translated that form on tour-level in 2019. He made the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the French Open and then reached his maiden ATP Tour final in Den Bosch.

The 25-year-old peaked at a career-high ranking of No.43 (currently No.46) following a run of strong results in the last couple of months. He was excellent again last week where reached the Round of 16 in Washington beating the likes of Jack Sock and Jan-Lennard Struff, before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in a tight two-setter.

Isner v Thompson Predictions & Tips

Isner has won both meetings against Thompson, one in 2017 at Roland Garros and the other at 2019 quarterfinals in New York. However, there is a marked improvement in Thompson’s game and results since then which is why Isner may not be looking at this opening round as walk in the park. The American is still a heavy favorite, but expect Thompson to push him.

Tip: Isner to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
