John Isner v Cristian Garin Head to Head

The two players have never met before and this will be their first ever meeting; an interesting clash between a big server suited well to the US hard courts and a clay court specialist.

US Hard Court Season Not Upto Isner’s Mark Yet

34 year old John Isner has bloomed a little late in his career, and attributed Roger Federer as the motivation behind him playing well into his mid 30s.

The 6’10” American had an excellent 2018, winning his first Masters 1000 in Miami, being a semi-finalist at Wimbledon (playing the epic semi-final against Kevin Anderson), and featuring at the ATP year end tour finals in London.

2019 has not been so good to the American who dropped out of the top ten rankings in the world, and despite making the finals again at the Miami Masters, he injured his foot in the loss against Roger Federer for the title. Isner was out for a few months and returned to the tour right before Wimbledon.

The American is yet to return to form, with early losses at Wimbledon, ATP 250 at Atlanta (where he is a five time winner) and at the Citi Open last week.

With a monstrous serve, Isner will back himself to return to his best form on the US hard courts.

Chilean Garin Hoping to Prove Himself Outside Clay

23 year old Cristian Garin has had a season that has already some contrasting highs and lows.

The Chilean broke onto the circuit in 2017 and was ranked outside the top 200 in the ATP rankings. 2018 was a better year for Garin, with three ATP Challenger titles and better performances in the main draw seeing him end the year at number 89 in the world.

A strong baseline with solid groundstrokes, Garin displayed his skills to play on slower surfaces by being a finalist at the 2019 Brasil open as well as winning the ATP 250 titles at Houston and Munich on clay. This moved him up to number 32 on the ATP rankings.

The Chilean comes to Montreal at the back of seven consecutive losses since the French Open, which is a stark contrast to his results in the earlier part of the season.

A favorable opponent in the form of Serbian Laslo Dere saw Garin make the second round and he will be looking for further victories to savage any loss in form.

Isner v Garin Predictions & Tips

Garin has had an excellent clay court season but is up against it when playing Isner on these courts. The Chilean brings neither a lot of confidence with him of late, nor a lot of experience on the hard courts.

Isner will start as a strong favorite and his serve on this surface will be difficult for Garin to tackle. While the Chilean can definitely trouble the big server, it seems likely.

Expect the Isner serve to see him through in straight sets.

Tip: Isner to win in straight sets: 11/10 (888Sport)
