Roger Federer returns to Cincinnati where is a seven time champion with an all-time 45-5 record (after being 1-4 in his first five matches here). This will his first match since the epic Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, which he lost in a fifth set tie-break after having two match-points on his serve earlier in the set.
Federer has a very good record at Cincinnati and the outdoor hard courts here have always been to his liking and served as ideal preparation for him for the US Open later in August. The Swiss was a finalist here last year, losing to Novak Djokovic in straight sets to give the Serb his first ever title in Mason, Ohio. Both Federer and Djokovic are drawn in the same half, and could potentially meet in the semi-finals.
The number three seed Federer will be looking for a strong start in his opener as he has some potentially more challenging opponents in the latter part of the week. A good performance against his unheralded Argentine opponent will give him the confidence and rest needed for later in the week.

Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero won his first tour level match at the 2019 Córdoba Open against Nicolas Jarry and continued to win his first title that tournament, defeating Guido Pella in the final. He then qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time at the French Open and made the round of 16 before losing to the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.
Another strong showing, being a losing finalist at the Swedish Open last month saw the Argentine reach a career best ranking of 56 on the ATP tour.
After defeating the likes of Nikoloz Basilashvilli and Richard Gasquet this season in their first meetings against them, Londero is off to a strong start in Cincinnati with a straight sets win over rising Italian star Matteo Berrettini.
With a game well suited to the clay courts, the 25 year old Argentine has good court coverage and strong baselines strokes on either wing.

Londero comes to this match as an underdog and despite a good run this year, the odds will be stacked against him heavily in this match.
The Argentine will look to continue the good form he has shown all year and is certainly capable of challenging the best. Given that this is Federer’s first match in a month since his epic loss to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, he may display some rust and nerves at the beginning.
However, Federer has a very good record in Cincinnati and is very comfortable here and should his rhythm in good time. Expect some good points and close games, but a straight set win for the Swiss seems to be the most likely outcome.
