David Goffin v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The two men have met twice before. Goffin won their first meeting in Tokyo in 2016, but Nishioka got his revenge just two weeks ago in Washington, although it was a close match decided by a third set tie-break.

Goffin Aiming for Back to Back Semis

The 28-year-old Belgian had his best ever result in a Masters event in Cincinnati last year, defeating both Kevin Anderson and Juan Martin del Potro en route to a semi-final with Roger Federer, which he was forced to abandon after the first set due to injury.

Now the man who has won four senior ATP career titles has an excellent chance of emulating that performance again this year.

It has not all been plain selling. He had a tough first round match against rising American star Taylor Fritz on Tuesday, who has already made three senior finals this year, but came back from losing the second set, to clinch the match. However, he comfortably beat Guido Pella of Argentina in the second round in straight sets, and enjoyed a similar margin of victory over Adrian Mannarino of France in the third round on Thursday.

A quarter-finalist at Wimbledon this year, and the runner-up in Halle, reaching the last four here would be an achievement to rank alongside those results.

Nishioka, Japanese Dream Continues

Nishioka continues to make his own personal history in Cincinnati, having already won five matches since he arrived in the city last week. First he had to beat John Millman of Australia and Joao Sousa just to get into the main draw. But, having achieved that milestone, the world number 77 has gone from strength to strength.

First he battled past Jordan Thompson in Australia in three sets, before achieving the best result of his career, defeating countryman and the number six seed Kei Nishikori in straight sets.

Not content with that, he beat Australian teenager Alex de Minaur, again in straight sets, to earn his place in the quarter-finals of a Masters event for the first time. He will start second-favourite, but that has been the case in all the matches he has contested here, and that has not made a difference to the result at all!

Goffin v Nishioka Predictions & Tips

Goffin is the favourite to win this match at 13/25, whilst Nishioka is priced at 7/4. Goffin is the higher ranked and seeded player, but Nishioka has proved this week that he cares little for reputations. The Belgian should win but it may be close.

Tip:  Goffin to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
