This is the first meeting between the two ladies on the WTA Tour.
Pliskova, a Top Favourite in New York
Czech No. 1 Karolina Pliskova arrived in New York with a great deal of consistency and rhythm, thanks to her good run in the US Open Series. She featured in Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Open, where the current Pan Pacific Open champion reached the quarterfinals.
Pliskova clearly had the form to go the distance but she fell to very determined players like Bianca Andreescu and Svetlana Kuznetsova respectively. Nonetheless, with three singles titles and just 12 losses this entire season, the number three seed has the opportunity here to win the Grand Slam.
Similar to other top players, there have been only a few instances where Pliskova never found herself in the penultimate rounds. Furthermore, a majority of the defeats that she has incurred this season have been at the hands of top players only.

Martincova, Hoping for a Miracle
Tereza Martincova has never made it past the first round in any Grand Slam event in her career so far and by the looks of it, it’s unlikely that she will break that jinx this time around.
Playing in ITF and WTA events, the Czech has had some success in the former but little in the latter. Playing mainly as a qualifier, the best she has done is reaching the second round in the WTA St. Petersburg earlier this season. As for her last event, Martincova featured in the 125K Series event in Karlsruhe, where she fell in the second round.

Expect Pliskova to wrap this one up in straight sets. As a former US Open runner-up, she has the experience, momentum, and skill set needed to move past someone as out of form as Martincova.
