Roger Federer v Sumit Nagal Head to Head

The two players have never met before and this will be their first ever meeting.

Federer Feeling Strong Ahead of US Open

Swiss maestro Roger Federer arrives in New York, which was a happy hunting ground for him, winning five times in a row between 2004-2008. His last decade at the US Open has seen many a disappointment and due to a mix of bad luck, freakish moments and unfriendly humid conditions, the bells have not tolled for the twenty-time grand slam champion.

Federer has had a good season winning titles at Dubai, Miami and Halle. Memories of a heartbreaking Wimbledon final loss to world number one Novak Djokovic after having two championship points will still be fresh in his mind, but will look to a good performance at the last major of the year to compensate for that.

The Swiss has only had two matches on the hard courts this swing, with an early loss to young Russian Andrey Rublev in Cincinnati. But, Federer has been seen practicing hard in New York and says he feels strong and ready to go.

The number three seed has a fairly generous draw, that sets him up well for a potential semi-final blockbuster against defending champion Novak Djokovic.

Dream & Nightmare Start for Nagal?

22-year old Indian Sumit Nagal is a relatively unknown name, not only in world tennis, but also in Indian tennis circles.

He is currently ranked 192nd in the world, which is a career high for him and has gone past the first round of the qualifiers at a major for the first time. Having played three singles matches thus far on the tour in his career, he is yet to win his first ATP singles match.

Nagal has featured in Davis Cup as well as ITF Futures title matches.

Having qualified for his ever first ever major, it is a dream start to his grand slam career to face one of the all-time greats of the sport. At the same time, Nagal may have preferred an opponent where he would fancy posing a challenge somewhat more than the current members of the ‘Big Three’ of tennis.

Federer v Nagal Predictions & Tips

While there have been many an upset in the history of Grand Slams, Indian boy Nagal pulling off a win here will definitely categorize among the biggest in recent times, if that were to happen.

Given the occasion, the atmosphere and the opponent, it is understandable that Nagal maybe a little overwhelmed. However, with minimal expectations and nothing to lose, the Indian will look to play freely and make a match out of it.

Federer will look to get accustomed to the night conditions at Arthur Ashe, something that has bothered him a little in recent years. At the same time, he will hope to keep this a short routine match and not want to extend it any more than needed.

While all will hope for a contest and a spirited challenge from young Napal, it is hard to envision any other outcome except a straight set Federer win.

Tip: Games Handicap – Sumit Nagal +9: 121/100 (888Sport)
