This is the first meeting between the two ladies on the WTA Tour.
Osaka – A Top Contender in New York
The 21-year-old Japanese will be hoping to relive her moments at the Flushing Meadows from last season when she rose to prominence with some incredible tennis. Defeating Serena Williams in the final to clinch her maiden Grand Slam trophy, Osaka has definitely set the precedent for the next generation of tennis players.
Since then, she has reached the final at the WTA Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and won her second Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open. Through the course, the number one seed also had to face her fair share of struggles with form and keeping up with the expectations.
Despite the fact that she hasn’t reached a final on the tour since her run in Melbourne earlier this year, Osaka has matured greatly as a player. She has made it to the quarterfinal on numerous occasions like the Italian Open, Rogers Cup, and most recently, the Cincinnati Open.
Interestingly, Osaka has also displayed a slight proclivity of losing when it comes to facing the underdogs. Four of her five recent losses have come against the players outside of top 20 – Sofia Kenin, Katerina Siniakova, and Yulia Putintseva.

Blinkova, Working Hard
So far this season, the 20-year-old Russian has worked relentlessly to establish herself on the women’s tour. Playing in a mix of ITF and WTA events, she has clearly had a lot of success in the former, having reached the penultimate rounds in many places.
However, on the WTA circuit, Blinkova has spent most of her time struggling to move past the qualifiers/early rounds. But at the same time, she just had a scintillating run and will certainly be happy with her performance. In the New York Bronx Open last week, Blinkova reached the quarterfinal as a qualifier.
Osaka v Blinkova Predictions & Tips
Expect no surprises here. Osaka, with all her recent form and momentum, should be able to win this one in straight sets. Blinkova, despite being in the same age group as her Japanese adversary, still has a long way to go.
