Kiki Bertens v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

This will be the seventh match between these two players with Bertens having a 4-2 advantage. In the time period between 2014 and 2016, Bertens was 3-0 up on head to bead but Pavlyuchenkova came back strongly to win two of their previous three encounters.

This year, they have already played twice and it’s 1-1 with Pavlyuchenkova having won their second round encounter at the Australian Open and Bertens winning at the St Petersburg Open.

Bertens Hoping to Inch Back towards Best Ranking

Having made it to four title-deciders already this year and won two of those four, Bertens is on the prowl to get back to her best ranking of number four but she will need to do a lot better at Grand Slams. Barring a semi-final appearance at the 2016 French Open and a quarter-final at the 2018 Wimbledon, Bertens has made it past the third round of a Grand Slam competition just once.

Even this year, her exits have been in the second, second and third rounds respectively of the first three Grand Slam competitions, and for a player with such a consistent record otherwise, it doesn’t augur too well.

Bertens’ best ranking of four on the WTA circuit came in the month of May when she won her second title of the year – it has to rank as one of her best wins ever, which consisted of victories over Jelena Osatapenko, Anastasija Sevastova, Petra Kvitova, Sloane Stephens and Simona Halep. All those were straight-set wins.

Can she push on now from her first round win over Paula Badosa and make it as far as she has in her Grand Slam career?

Pavlyuchenkova’s Stocks Have Fallen

Once ranked 13th in the world, Pavlyuchenkova’s stocks have fallen in recent times and the last two years, starting 2018, have been particularly underwhelming for her. Since winning the Strasbourg Open in 2018, she has won and lost 28 matches apiece but in more recent times, this record is even worse.

A win over Julia Goerges in the first round at Stuttgart was followed by a run of nine matches before the US Open in which had won just one match. Interestingly, that win came over Aryna Sabalenka, a top 10 player.

Pavlyuchenkova made it to the second round with a straight-set win over Pauline Parmentier but to be able to continue with that momentum against a player like Bertens might be expecting a tad too much.

Bertens v Pavlyuchenkova Predictions & Tips

Bertens will be a heavy favourite to win this one given the obvious difference in pedigree and form between the two players and that reflects in the odds on offer – 3/8 for Bertens to 5/2 if Pavlyuchenkova wins. We are looking at an easy encounter here for Bertens, who should win in straight sets.

Tip: Bertens to win in straight sets: 10/11 (888Sport)
