Anett Kontaveit v Belinda Bencic Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the tour.

A Slow Run for Bencic

Over the last few weeks, the 22-year-old has gone through what can only be described as a slump. Currently ranked World No. 12, Bencic had a disappointing run in the Wimbledon, Rogers Cup, and Cincinnati, losing in the early rounds.

However, these losses are by no means an indicator of her true potential on the circuit. At the start of the season, she won the WTA Dubai and reached the semifinal in Indian Wells and the Madrid Open. In these big tournaments, she defeated the likes of Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Simona Halep, and Petra Kvitova.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Bencic has had a run like this. She is a former top-10 player herself and is more than familiar with what’s needed to become the best.

So far in the Flushing Meadows, she has defeated Mandy Minella and Alize Cornet with some ease.

Kontaveit, Looking to Make Some Waves

Anett Kontaveit has had a pretty mediocre year so far. She has neither been that great or that bad to warrant a harsh criticism as such. As a semifinalist in Miami and runner-up in Stuttgart, she has had her fair share of wins over the top players. The only thing is she is yet to convert those wins into consistency.

While she has defeated the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Osaka, Maria Sharapova, and Bianca Andreescu, she has also gone through spells without registering any significant wins. In Toronto and Cincinnati, she lost in the third round to Karolina Pliskova and Ashleigh Barty respectively.

So far in the Flushing Meadows, she has dispatched the likes of Sara Sorribes Tormo and Ajla Tomljanovic, taking her strike rate up to 25-16.

Bencic v Kontaveit Predictions & Tips

Bencic has never made it to the second week in New York and that’s something she will be hoping to change, this time around. Truth to be told, this match is a bit too close to call, simply because both the players are more than capable of putting up a good fight here. More than their style of play, the thing that will matter here is grit and endurance.

Tip: Over 2.5 sets in the match: 7/5 (888Sport)
