Over the course of her career, the 28-year-old Petra Martic had never made it past the second round in Flushing Meadows. This time around, however, she has gone as far as round four after clinical wins over Tamara Zidansek, Ana Bogdan, and Anastasija Sevastova.
It’s certainly surprising in a few ways to see the Croat make it this far in the US Open. In the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Open, she lost right in the first round, casting doubts over her form. But then again, Martic has always found a way to perform well in Grand Slams.
She shot to prominence in the French Open by reaching the quarterfinal. Then at Wimbledon, she made it to the fourth round. On the two occasions, she defeated the likes of Danielle Collins and Karolina Pliskova. In addition to this, she also reached the semifinal in Charleston and Birmingham.
Martic is a fierce opponent who works hard and is hungry for wins. She has the skill set needed to take Serena head-on, but winning here is a whole different ball game.
Serena Saunters into Week Two
World No. 8 Serena Williams has been on a phenomenal roll in the US Open through this entire decade. In her last eight appearances here, she has won the title thrice while settling for the runner-up trophy on two other occasions.
This time around too, she looks well on track to repeat that kind of a run again. She was handed a fairly tricky draw but Williams handed it rather brilliantly. Whether it has something to do with being in New York or just her form, it has been pretty difficult to stop her.
Coming after reaching the final in the Rogers Cup, where she retired in the final match, Williams dispatched Maria Sharapova in the opener with 6-1, 6-1. After that, she defeated Catherine McNally and Karolina Muchova to reach this stage.
After having a slow start to the season, mainly on account of injuries, Williams had a sensational run at the SW19, marking her start of the comeback.

Expect Serena to win this one comfortably. She has been absolutely unstoppable in the US Open and it will be difficult for someone like Martic to do the same.
