A Career-Defining Run for Wang
The 27-year-old Chinese player has always been one of the few players trying to leave their mark on the tour and seeing some success in their endeavours. As a semifinalist in the Wuhan Open last season, Wang has been building her momentum for quite some time and now, she has finally had the chance to showcase.
Arriving in New York with a win-loss tally of 18-15, she was fresh off a semifinal run in the Bronx Open – one of her better performances this entire season. Capitalizing on that, Wang started as the number 18 seed where she knocked out Caroline Dolehide, Alison Van Uytvanck, Fiona Ferro to reach the fourth round.
It was there that Wang delivered one of the biggest upsets in the tournament – she dispatched the number 2 seed, Ashleigh Barty, in straight sets without as much as batting an eye. Now, a part of the top 20, she is set to face the strongest opponent in her career so far. She will also have a go at the ultimate glory.
Last year, Qiang Wang had a sensational time on the tour when she reached four WTA finals. She won the title in two of those. As for the other two, she had to settle for the runner-up trophy in the Hong Kong Open and WTA Elite Trophy.
Williams, Showing no Signs of Stopping
After reaching the final in the Wimbledon and the Rogers Cup, it appears that Serena Williams has not only found her groove back but also looks determined to crack into the top five and win yet another major title.
Despite these impeccable results, it is hard to imagine Williams not having such a sensational run in the Flushing Meadows. Through the years, she has always managed to reach the semifinal, at the very least, while winning the title on six other occasions.
This time too, it was business as usual for the 37-year-old American, who dispatched the likes of Karolina Muchova and Petra Martic to reach the quarterfinal. It was an easy win for Williams, who didn’t need a lot of effort to deliver these victories.

Williams will start this match as the overwhelming favourite to win. However, there have been aberrations where she has been defeated by underdogs, unseeded players on big occasions. This match may turn to be one of those, especially given the way Wang is playing at the moment. However, for it to happen, the Chinese player will need to summon all her will and power to move past Williams.
