Serena Williams v Elina Svitolina Preview:

The last time these two players met was at the 2016 Olympics, which is the only time that the Ukranian Elina Svitolina has defeated 23-time grand slam winner Serena Williams.

Williams leads the head-to-head 4-1 having won all four meetings prior. Both players careers have evolved since that Oympics meeting in Rio, however.

Serena Williams won her 23rd major title in January 2017, when she won the Australian Open, making her the winner of the most majors in the Open era and putting her one behind Margaret Court in the all time count.

Since her 23rd title, the American has given birth to a daughter and returned to the court after a break. While her appearance at tournaments has been relatively sparse, she has been on the verge of her 24th title a few times now. 2018 Wimbledon final loss to Angelique Kerber, 2018 USOpen final loss to Naomi Osaka and 2019 Wimbledon final loss to Simona Halep are instances of her missing out on the coveted number 24.

Williams is the number eight seed at the US Open at the back of a good run at the Canadian Open in Toronto prior to her having to withdraw from the final due to injury.

Elina Svitolina was ranked number three in 2017, a year where she won three Premier 5 titles. The following year was a start-stop year for her, but she ended the year on a strong note winning the year end WTA finals.

2019 has been a more consistent season for her being a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open and a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, prior to another semi-final run here at the US Open.

Her US Open has been impressive recording wins against Venus Williams, Dayana Yastremska, Madison Keys and Johanna Konta, as she aims to qualify for her first major final.

Svitolina is an aggressive player who has a good balance between offense and defense and has a game well suited to the slower hard courts at Flushing.

This promises to be an exciting encounter, with Williams determined to seal number 24 in New York, and Svitolina looking to have a short at her first major title on Saturday.

Both players have been in good form this past week and a half, and one can expect a good match of rallies and well contested points with some powerful shotmaking.

Svitolina has played the stronger opponents thus far, and looked in control. She will need to not let the occasion, crowd or opponent get the better of her. Williams has been here many times and no occasion is too big for her, but will need to keep a consistent level throughout this match.

Expect an intense three-setter, with Svitolina making her first ever major final.
