Grigor Dimitrov v Daniil Medvedev Preview:

In a section of the draw, where a Wimbledon final repeat in the US Open semi-finals was the most talked about match-up potentially between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, we now have a somewhat unlikely semi-final. Though, if one looks at the players and their paths to get here, both are very deserving. Both players have played each other twice, in 2017 and the head-to-head is tied at 1-1.

Daniil Medvedev has gone from strength to strength this year. Part of the much talked about ‘Next Gen’ of tennis, he has certainly been the leader of the pack by a distance this year. With a season that began well with a good performance in Brisbane in January before the Australian Open, the Russian has been on a relentless match-winning streak after Wimbledon.

Medvedev was a finalist at the ATP 500 in Washington D.C, the ATP Masters 1000 in Montreal, winner of the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati and now a semi-finalist at the US Open. His game has evolved as the year has progressed, bringing in a strong serve and second serve, excellent all court coverage and the ability to close points at the net when needed. The Russian has defeated world number one Novak Djokovic twice this year already, at Monte Carlo and Cincinnati, putting up excellent displays on both occasions.

He has already qualified for the ATP Year End Tour finals in London with his quarter-final win at the US Open over Stanislas Wawrinka and is ranked number four in the world behind the ‘Big Three’.

Medvedev had a few injury concerns in his last two rounds and it remains to be seen how well he has recovered during his two-day break before the semi-finals.

Grigor Dimitrov was ranked number three in the world at the end of 2017, having been an Australian Open semi-finalist, won the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati and winning the year end ATP Tour Finals in London. After a decent start to 2018, Dimitrov’s career for the last season and a half has been injuries, disappointing early exits and an overall drop in rankings and confidence. He was ranked number 78 at the start of the US Open.

The Bulgarian has had some tricky draws in recent times, most notably running into Stanislas Wawrinka a few times in early rounds. With a not too difficult draw this time around, Dimitrov has played within himself and had a few things go his away, such as his second round opponent Borna Coric pulling out, and his potential fourth round opponent Kei Nishikori losing early, setting him up for a quarter-final showdown with Swiss maestro Roger Federer, who had a 7-0 record against him.

A back and forth five-setter where Federer was nursing an injury and not quite himself during the later stages of the match saw Dimitrov making the semi-finals in a match that may well have turned his career, confidence and foreseeable future around.

If healthy and close to full fitness, the Russian Medvedev starts as a favorite here, given his recent performances and form. He has done almost everything correctly and been the player of the US Open series unanimously. He will be relieved he is not playing a player of the caliber of Roger Federer in his first slam semi-final as the occasion can sometimes get the better of one, although the Russian has shown no nerves even when on the big stage.

Dimitrov will be on an emotional high and will believe he can make his first major final turning around what has thus far been a poor season for him, reaching all-time lows. He played a well-thought out game against Federer and showed no signs of nerves even when down or when closing out.

Both players have games that are well suited to the courts, with good court coverage, athleticism and the ability to partake in effective shotmaking. Medvedev’s injury and Dimitrov’s emotional recovery from the last round are two key factors that will determine the outcome among others.

Expect a tough battle with both aiming for their first major final, with Medvedev edging the Bulgarian in four tight sets.
