Medvedev came close to upsetting the world number two and the 18-time (and now 19) Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal in the final of the competition after everything seemed lost for him. He took the champion to five sets after being down by two sets to love, much to the surprise of everyone watching.

But that wasn’t the first time in the competition that Medvedev had struggled only display his mental toughness and come back and deliver.

There were matches in which he suffered from fitness issues and was on the verge of quitting but found motivation from the crowd booing his behaviour and went on to win the match. He later apologised for his behaviour but the seeds had been sowed – here was a player who, if given an inch, could convert that into a mile.

That was on display in the US Open 2019 final as well, when it looked like Nadal had more or less finished his opponent. Up two sets to love and with a break in the third set, the Spaniard might have lost bit of his focus but that was enough for Medvedev to not just overcome the break he was down but to break Nadal a second time and win the set.

And just when Nadal was wondering what went wrong there, Medvedev repeated the dose in the fourth set as well to tie the match. It was only the world number two’s tenacity coupled with the experience of having played in 21 Grand Slam finals that took him out of that sudden mire and won him the match.

So while Medvedev has all the other tools that saw him win the title at Cincinnati and make three other finals during the US Open series, the biggest of them all is his never-say-die spirit, one that has shone through on many an occasion over the last one month or so.

No surprises then that Medvedev has been catapulted to the fourth spot behind Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to win the Australian Open title next year. Bookmakers are offering 16/1 for a Medvedev win, after the Russian also moved to fifth spot in the ATP Rankings.

Djokovic, despite his retirement from the US Open and calls from John McEnroe that his season might be over, remains the favourite to go the distance in next year’s opening Grand Slam. Rafael Nadal’s cut to 9/2 to pip Djokovic but he remains a distant second after the Serb starts at 13/8, while Roger Federer, who came close to winning the 2019 Wimbledon title is 17/2 at the moment.

While Medvedev has broken through the ranks of the Next-Gen tennis stars, what does the market think of the rest of them? Alexander Zverev might not have had the best tennis season, but he still won a title and has a 36-19 win-loss record for the year so far, while Stefanos Tsitsipas’ solid start has meandered along the way with the first round exit at US Open necessitating a rethink about how much he plays.

Both Zverev and Tsitsipas are 20/1 at the moment to win the Australian Open, while the old warhorse Juan Martin del Potro might have played only 12 matches so far this year, but he is just behind that pair at 25/1.

Our pick? We think Djokovic still has it in him to make it back, fit, and add to his tally of Australian Open titles.
