While Rafael Nadal has made rapid strides in lowering the gap between Novak Djokovic and himself at the top, Bianca Andreescu has made it to the top five of the WTA Rankings after her US Open title win.

Nadal continues to remain the second-ranked player in the world despite his title win at the US Open, but the gap between the two players is down to a mere 660 points. Eyes will now be on the fitness of both, Nadal and Djokovic, and more on the world number one Serb, who retired from his fourth round match against Stan Wawrinka because of his shoulder problem.

If Djokovic is unable to feature in too many of his planned competitions the rest of the season, Nadal should automatically overtake him. That’s because Nadal didn’t play in any tournament after the US Open last year and isn’t defending any points while Djokovic has a few points to defend.

Roger Federer remains at three on the ATP Rankings but the big move is Daniil Medvedev, who has usurped Dominic Thiem to grab the fourth spot. Thiem is now fifth, while Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Kei Nishikori, Karen Khachanov and Roberto Baustista Agut complete the top 10 line-up.

On the WTA side of things, US Open champion Andreescu has moved 10 places to the fifth spot, while Ash Barty has reclaimed the number one spot from Naomi Osaka despite poor results for both. Karolina Pliskova is the new number two while Elina Svitolina, who made the semi-final last week, is ranked third ahead of Osaka at fourth.

There have been ranking falls for Simona Halep (sixth), Petra Kvitova (seventh) and Kiki Bertens (eighth) while Serena Williams, who made the final last US Open too also loses one rank.

Among the the other top gainers in the WTA Rankings are Wang Qiang, who is 12th now, Johanna Konta at 11th and Belinda Bencic, now in the top 10.
