The 2019 Japan Women’s Open continues on Wednesday, September 11 with its second round action and some of the players that will be in action include the top two seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Veronika Kudermetova. Hsieh Su-wei v Priscilla Hon Preview:
Both players, the top seeded Su-wei and Australia’s Hon needed three sets to make it through to the second round. And incidentally, both players started off their first round matches like they couldn’t wait to set up this meeting, before they were pulled back in the second set.
Speaking of setting up meetings, this is the first time that these players will be facing off at the highest level, separated by nearly 100 ranks on the WTA charts and 12 years in age. Su-wei made the second round at the US Open recently too before falling in three sets to Karolina Muchova while she had earlier entered the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Open.
She has managed to knock off early opponents on a regular basis but Su-wei’s major issue is winning more than two matches in a row in a competition. The last time she did that was at the Miami Open, following on from a semi-final appearance at the Dubai Open.
It’s been tougher for Hon though, having to play at the lower level competitions to garner enough points to feature in tournaments like these. She won three qualifiers to make the main draw at the US Open and managed a second round at the French Open in her otherwise underwhelming season. The good news, however, is her ranking of 123rd is her career best right now and one can expect her to give her opponent a fight.

Veronika Kudermetova v Christina McHale Preview:
The 48th-ranked Kudermetova has been seeded second in this competition, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given this is the career-best for for the 22-year-old Russian. It’s been a good year for Kudermetova as well, having qualified to make the quarter-final at the Shenzhen Open earlier this year, and later going on to win the title at Guadalajara Open.
And her clinical display in round one at this competition at the Hiroshima Open in which she disposed off Varvara Lepchenko 6-4, 6-2 should give her a major boost coming into her first ever match against McHale.
McHale has fallen off the grid to an extent but if her 6-2, 6-4 win against Greet Minnen was anything to go by, she won’t be an easy proposition for Kudermetova. Still expecting the Russian to win but it would take her three sets or very gruelling couple of them.

Zarina Diyas v Nao Hibino Preview:
This will be the fourth meeting between Diyas and Hibino but none of those matches have come in nearly six years. Just for the record, for what such old face-offs are worth, Diyas leads 2-1 against Hibino.
Diyas has had a decent showing on hard court surfaces this year, with a quarter-final at Washington Open and winning through the qualifiers to reach the second round in Cincinnati being the highlights during the US Open series.
At times she has played at the ITF circuit to garner points and has been reasonably successful there as well, winning a title at Gifu. She was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Danka Kovinic in her first round match and should start a favourite against local player, the 146th-ranked Hibino. Hibino was a 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 winner over Leylah Annie Fernandez in her opener.

Laura Siegemund v Patricia Tig Preview:
Much like the previous match-up, this is also the fourth time these two players are facing off against each other and Siegemund leads 2-1 on head to head. These matches have been in the more recent past though, with one of them earlier this year at Bucharest on clay where Tig was a crushing 6-3, 6-1 winner in the semi-final.
While Siegemund has played a lot of her matches at the highest level this year and possesses a 12-11 record on hard court, Tig has tried to rebuild her profile through matches at the lower level. And the latter has won a title on clay at Karlsruhe too, which could make this a tough match to call. A three-setter in the offing.
