Martic, in a Decent Form
The 28-year-old Croat arrived in China after a fairly decent run in the US Open. She reached the fourth-round there, where she fell to Serena Williams. That was her third such run in a Grand Slam this season, with a couple of good performances in the French Open and Wimbledon as well.
The winner of this year’s Istanbul Cup, Martic also reached the penultimate rounds in a few other tournaments like Charleston Open, Madrid Open, and WTA Birmingham. Despite a disappointing run in the build-up to the final major of the year, she still managed to do a decent job.
Currently ranked World No. 23, she started her campaign in Zhengzhou with a straight-set win over Jasmine Paolini.

Ferro, Looking to Make Waves
It has been a landmark year for the 22-year-old Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro, who won her maiden singles title in the Swiss Open Laussane. With a strike-rate of 31-22, she has been working really hard to climb up in the rankings and make a name for herself.
Despite her form, she has certainly been impressive, given that she was outside the top 100 and now, she is World No. 61. At the Flushing Meadows, she reached the third round after moving past Daria Gavrilova and Kristina Mladenovic. She had a similar run in Palermo and Bastad as well.
As for her run in Zhengzhou, it has been fairly easy so far as she moved past Zhaoxuan Yang in straight sets.
