Kevin Anderson has ruled himself out of the rest of the tennis season because of his fitness issues. He has said he will look to recover from his right knee injury before making a comeback.

Anderson’s season had already been hampered by injuries in 2019. He last played in Wimbledon, where he entered the tournament as last year’s finalist. Unfortunately for him, this time around he could not emulate last year’s showing. The South African was beaten in straight sets by Argentina’s Guido Pella, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(4).

He has been quite unlucky this year as he earlier also had issues with a right elbow injury. Anderson has been limited to participating in only five events this year as a result.

While he was hoping to get fit in time to make the US Open, it was not to be. He pulled out of that Slam a week prior to its start. The South African had made his first major final at the US Open back in 2017, losing out to Rafael Nadal in straight sets.

He has now confirmed that he is unlikely to return to tennis this year. What the Anderson would hope for is to get some good rest in order to recover from his knee injury that saw him miss the final slam of the year. His current ranking has dropped 18th in the world after being a world number five at the end of the 2018 Wimbledon.

He announced his decision via a post on Twitter. He said in his post:

“I have spoken with my team, consulted with doctors, and we have decided that the best course of action is to take the rest of the year off and prepare for 2020. This will give me enough time to undergo more rehab processes and get healthy.”
