Su-wei Hsieh v Nao Hibino Preview:
The top seeded Su-wie Hsieh has had a couple of tough rounds in the tournament so far but the good news is she has prevailed both times. First she overcame Japanese wild-card entrant Riza Osaki in three sets and then needed a 7-6, 7-5 in the final two sets following the loss of the first to Priscilla Hon in the second round.
Now she takes on her second Japanese opponent of the tournament, Nao Hibino, a player she has played thrice against in her career. The first time they played was on the ITF tour in 2015 where Hibino needed three sets to surprise Hsieh but since then her opponent has won twice in a row including once at a Fed Cup match in 2016 and then again in Auckland last year.
Hibino, who was once ranked 56th in the world, has fallen off the perch to 146th right now but these two wins so far in the tournament should give her some boost. After overcoming Annie Fernandez in a tough three-setter in her opener, she overcame Zarina Diyas in the second after her opponent retired following a trailing by a set.

Veronika Kudermetova v Laura Siegemund Preview:
Second seeded Kudermetova eased her way past Christina McHale in her straight-set win second round win and will now take on German eighth seed Laura Siegemund in her quarter-final. This was after Kudermetova had earlier registered a 6-4, 6-2 win over Varvara Lepchenko in her opener while Siegemund needed three sets to make it past Romanian qualifier Patrici Tig last match.
This will be the first meeting between these players and with an age gap of nine years between them, Kudermetova could just have a lot more in the tank than her opponent for this encounter. Siegemund was ranked 27th in the world at one point but is now 84th on the WTA Rankings, and has an ordinary year.
Kudermetova is currently at her best ranking of 48th, has a title on hard court and looks like she has the game to absolutely rampage past Siegemund. In fact expecting a straight-set win over the Russian second seed.

Sara Sorribes Tormo v Misaki Doi Preview:
This will be the first meeting between Japan’s Misaki Doi and Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo. Rankings-wise Doi is slightly behind, 107th to 85th in the world, but she has given a solid display of her skills so far with back to back three-set wins in the tournament so far. On the other hand, Tormo was stretched in her opener by Sorana Cirstea before blanking Varvara Flink in round two.
Both players faced two very low-ranked players in their previous wins, so this might be their toughest test of the tournament as you would expect from a quarter-final and for two evenly-poised players, it could go either way. We could be looking at a three-setter that the Spaniard might edge.

Alison van Uytvanck v Mihaela Buzarnerscu Preview:
Belgium’s Alison van Uytvanck, who is the third seed in the tournament, joins Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu in the quarter-final with the winner taking on one of Hsieh Su-wei or Nao Hibino in the next match. These two have played each other on two previous occasions and the head to head is tied at 1-1 with a match played in 2017 and 2018 each.
Interestingly, both were easy wins – with Buzarnescu winning 6-4, 6-2 against van Uytvanck at the Poitiers ITF tournament in 2017 before the roles were reversed in a 6-1, 6-0 win for the Belgian at the Budapest Open.
Buzarnescu has had a horrid year, which is why these two wins in the tournament so far make for some respite for the 125th-ranked player. She might not, however, be able to match the 63rd-ranked van Uytvanck has already won a title this year to go with a final at Karlsruhe Open.
