Garbine Muguruza v Su-Wei Hsieh Head to Head

The two ladies have met only once and Hsieh was the winner on that instance. The match took place in the Australian Open last season, where Hsieh trumped Muguruza 7-6(1), 6-4.

Muguruza, on a Disappointing Spell

Two-time Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza has been struggling with her form for more than a year now. Her struggles started last season when she fell out of the top 10, with this season only exacerbating her situation.

While she did manage to land herself a singles title in Monterrey in April, it hasn’t been enough for her to re-ignite her form on the tour. In fact, she looked a lot more comfortable at the start of the year but with time, her momentum has dropped significantly.

Things only got worse in the US Open Series when she went past the American swing without a single win. In her last three outings on the tour, Muguruza is 0-3, losing to players outside the top 10. Of course, her recent change in coaching may also be a factor here – in July after her debacle at the Wimbledon, the Spaniard parted ways with Sam Sumyk and opted to work with Anabel Medina Garrigues on a temporary basis.

Muguruza is taking things slowly for the time being, with constant reassessment on the books. With a win-loss tally of 21-13, she has a long path ahead of her.

Hsieh, On a Confident Roll

The 33-year-old Hsieh has had a pretty decent season so far. As a doubles player, she won the Wimbledon Women’s Doubles with Barbora Strycova, in addition to reaching the final in Dubai and Madrid for the same.

While she hasn’t been that successful in replicating that kind of success on the singles circuit, the Taiwan-born player has had her moments. Among her highlights include her quarterfinal runs in Hiroshima, Washington DC, and the Miami Open.

Hsieh was also a semifinalist in WTA Dubai, where she defeated the likes of Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova. Combine that with her wins over Naomi Osaka and Caroline Wozniacki in Miami, we have got ourselves a player who is more than capable of taking on the big guns.

Muguruza v Hsieh Tips & Predictions

Muguruza is heading into this fixture low on confidence and momentum. Meanwhile, Hsieh has been in an imposing form and will not hesitate to punish the Spaniard for her mistakes on the court. This is a critical match for the two players – more so for Muguruza as she is on a quest to seek answers regarding her form, coaching, and possibly, herself.
