Svitolina Hoping to Shrug off Shock Zhengzhou Defeat
The Ukrainian has shown good form at the top tournaments this year but when it comes to the competitions which carry lesser points, her form has vanished. This is in sharp contrast to the previous two seasons when she collected nine tournament wins.
This hasn’t affected her ranking too much – in fact she is a world number three – because of how she has done at the Grand Slams and other Premier competitions. However, she would look to shrug off the listless showing otherwise, including the quarter-final defeat, after a first round bye, at Zhengzhou. She had gone down to Kristina Mladenovic in a three-setter. Against an opponent ranked 151st in the world, it should not be much of a problem but the difficulties will come at a later stage.

Dalila Jakupovic’s Shock Season
Yep, Jakupovic has fallen to 151st in the world, after being at her career-best as recently as last November and that has been down to her horrible season this year. 45 matches played so far, 32 lost. Not the kind of statistics you want to see once you are inching towards a top 50 rank.
After a string of five defeats, she finally won a match at Nanchang, but lost again in the second round. And that was followed by a qualifier exit this week at Guangzhou. That she has made it through to the main draw as a lucky loser should be a motivation to push on but the difference in form and confidence sounds too vast at the moment.
What the Slovenian can hope for is to work on her game and try and push her opponent, and even in defeat there are enough takeaways.
