This is the first meeting between the two ladies on the WTA Tour.
Gibbs, with a Chance to Make an Impression
Starting as a qualifier in this year’s Pan Pacific Open, Nicole Gibbs has so far been truly exceptional. She cleared her bracket in the qualifiers comfortably and in the opener, she defeated Alison Riske in straight sets to reach the second round.
It was an impressive performance by Gibbs, given that Riske’s performance this season has been pretty brilliant. To defeat a player as strong as her will be a good confidence booster for World No. 135, and now, she faces Kerber – an opponent who has been battling with form woes for quite some time now.
Gibbs has spent a great deal of her time on the tour this season, playing in the ITF events. She has reached the final twice and has gone the distance once. She hasn’t had the same kind of success on the WTA Tour, unfortunately, with early losses in events like the Rogers Cup and US Open.

Kerber, Out of the Top 10
Angelique Kerber started the season as World No. 2 but now, she is ranked at the 15th position. In the first half of the season, she managed to retain her grip in the top 10, courtesy of her runner-up feat in the Indian Wells Open and Eastbourne. She also had a few penultimate runs in Doha, Mallorca, and Monterrey.
But things changed post-Wimbledon – in the US Open series, to be more precise. With a litany of first-round defeats in Toronto, Cincinnati, and New York – all at the hands of players outside the top 15, Kerber’s form took a toll.
Things didn’t change last week in Zhenzhou either when she was handed a shocking defeat at the hands of Alison Riske in the opener in three sets. As a result, her win-loss tally at the moment stands at 25-16 and is on a four-match losing streak.
