Mertens, Seeking to Replicate her Doubles Form
Elise Mertens arrived in Japan following a superb, breathtaking time in the US Open. Not only did she reach the quarterfinal at the Flushing Meadows in the singles half, but she also went all the way to win the women’s doubles title with Aryna Sabalenka.
So far in Osaka, the Belgian has done a fantastic job of retaining that momentum. In the first round, she moved past Whitney Osuigwe in straight sets. In the second, she faced some resistance against Su-Wei Hsieh – a tough, experienced Taiwanese player. However, with some grit and quality tennis, she breezed through with 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
Earlier this season, Mertens was also the winner of the Qatar Open, where she defeated Simona Halep in the final. With that, she has also got a few other top 10 players under her belt like Kiki Bertens and Angelique Kerber.
