Andy Murray v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

The pair have  played each other once before, last month in Winston Salem, with Sandgren winning in straight sets..

Murray On a Comeback Trail

For three time Grand Slam winner, and twice Olympic gold medallist, Murray, the Asian championships tournaments represent the latest stage in the comeback of a career that looked to be over when he told the world’s media after Melbourne in January that he might have to quit the sport because of persistent hip problems.

Since then he has had revolutionary hip surgery and reports himself free from pain, although whether he can ever get back to the shape and form that made him the world number one player must be open to considerable doubt.

Still, he needs to make small steps and this is one of them. He has not played competitively since reaching the third round of the Challenger event in Mallorca, so should be fresh.

Sandgren Winner of Maiden Tour Title in Auckland

World number 68 Sandgren began the year by clinching victory at the Auckland Open, the first ever senior career title for the 28-year old American.

Unfortunately for the man who made his name by reaching the quarter-final in Melbourne in 2018, that is as good as it got on the singles tour this year, although he was a beaten finalist in the doubles at Winston-Salem.

His best results since New Zealand have come in Challenger events – he was a beaten finalist in Sarasota, and lost in the semi-finals in Monterrey and Tallahassee.

His last event was the US Open, where he lost in the second round.

Murray v Sandgren Predictions & Tips

Murray is slight favourite for this match at 4/5 whilst Sandgren is priced at 6/5. That seems slightly generous to the Scot who was beaten by the same man just a month ago, and it will be a sign that he is on the comeback trail if he manages to come through this match.

Tip: Sandgren to win in three sets: 4/1 (888Sport)
