Petra Kvitova v Dayana Yastremska Head to Head

This will be the first time both the players will be facing each other on tour.

Petra Kvitova Looking to Regain the Lost Momentum

2018 was an excellent year for Kvitova, where she won five titles. She had an even more impressive start to the 2019 campaign which she began by winning the Sydney Open & reaching the Australia Open final where she lost to Naomi Osaka of Japan. She achieved further two finals in the next couple of months, losing in Dubai but winning the title at Stuttgart.

Her impressive form & consistent results got her to the number two ranking in the world, and she looked set to one better before she picked up a calf injury during her indifferent clay-court season and it took her almost two months to regain her fitness. Now world number seven, the Czech had a disappointing US Open where she bowed out in the second round. Here in Wuhan she got a bye in the first round and has come through two straight sets victories to reach the last eight.

The 29-year-old is a left-hander & is known for her accurate & quick serves and excellent timing. There is no reason why Kvitova can not get back her pre-injury form. She only reached the round of 16 in the last year here at Wuhan, and she will hope to go deep this year to recover some of the ranking points she has lost this season.

Yastremska Full of Confidence After a Huge Victory

At just 19, Yastremska has taken the WTA tour by storm this year and is already looked up as the next big thing in the women’s game. She ended last year with a win at the Hong Kong Open and has added two more titles this year, one in Thailand & Strasbourg.

She reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon earlier this year and has already defeated some big names like Victoria Azarenka, Johanna Konta, Aryna Sabalenka & Garbine Muguruza in her short career. She comes into the match with her first-ever victory against a world top 10 by beating World No. two Karolina Pliskova in straight sets.

A strong double-handed backhand and an attacking baseline game are her strengths, and with age, her game will only mature, and she will gain more power in her shots as her muscles develop fully. The Ukrainian will go into the match full of confidence after taking out a big name in the previous round.

Kvitova v Yastremska Tips & Predictions

Kvitova is finding her feet again after an injury setback that derailed her second half of the season. Whereas Yastremska is going into the match full of confidence and on the back of some impressive victories.

Both players will fancy their chances, but I would pick Kvitova to get past the emerging Ukrainian to reach the semi-finals. Kvitova’s strong serve & ability play the big points well will hold her in good stead. On the other hand, Yastremska does have a tendency to drop off after a significant result or winning a title, and her victory against world number two Pliskova is likely to have that effect on her.
