Simona Halep v Rebecca Peterson Head to Head

In their one and only encounter on the tour, back in the 2013 WTA Bastad, Halep sailed to a comfortable win over Peterson with 6-4, 6-0.

Halep, Hungry for More in Asia

It has been quite an interesting journey for Simona Halep this season. From experimenting with different coaching styles to being humbled by the rising, emerging stars on the WTA Tour, the Romanian has had to navigate a steep learning curve and retain her place in the top 10.

As the finalist in the Qatar Open and Madrid Open, she delivered some impressive victories over the likes of Ashleigh Barty, Johanna Konta, Belinda Bencic, and Elina Svitolina. Building on this form, Halep eventually moved on to win the Wimbledon title where she defeated none other than Serena Williams in the final.

In the US Open swing, however, her form took a sharp hit as she fell in the early rounds. Then, things got worse for her in Wuhan Open last week when she pulled out of her second-round match against Elena Rybakina due to injury. It appears to be a chronic back problem that forced Halep to leave the match. Whether she has fully recovered from it is something that we will find out when she steps on the court against Peterson.

Peterson, Rocking her Best Season

The 24-year-old Rebecca Peterson is heading into this tournament on the back of a decent run in the Asian swing so far. Earlier this month, she won her maiden WTA singles title in the Jiangxi Open in Nanchang. Then, in Wuhan, she reached the second round as a qualifier where she ultimately fell to Petra Martic.

The Swede has started as a qualifier in a lot of these tournaments this season but has never really managed to break the deadlock of moving past the early rounds. With a win-loss tally of 29-20, she has the talent on her side which needs to be honed some more. But so far in Asia, she has proven to be fairly impressive and it will be intriguing to see how she handles Halep.

Halep v Peterson Tips & Predictions

Ordinarily, Halep would have started this match as the favourite to win but given her back problems, her chances are rather steep here. She will need to be cautious to not overexert herself and Peterson, being a smart player, is likely to make Halep do just that. In many ways, this will be a battle of the wits too.
