The 23-year-old Belgian has delivered one of the most impressive victories of her career by knocking out the Croat ace Petra Martic in the opener of China Open. Mertens sailed to a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win to continue her decent performance in Asia.
Over the last few weeks, she has also reached the semifinal in the WTA Osaka and second round in Wuhan. Currently ranked World No. 3 on the doubles circuit, she won the US Open doubles title with Aryna Sabalenka and will be hoping to replicate a similar form here.
