Elina Svitolina v Kiki Bertens Head to Head

At the moment, Svitolina holds a slim 2-1 lead over the Dutchwoman, last beating her in the WTA Finals in 2018. This is also the first meeting between the two players this year.

Bertens, Eyeing a Quality Result in Beijing

Ever since reaching the final of the Palermo Open at the end of July, Kiki Bertens hasn’t quite replicated that feat again in any other tournament. If anything, her form has deteriorated since that inspiring run as she lost early in Toronto, Cincinnati, and the US Open. These results certainly come as a surprise, to say the least, given that in the first half of the season, she broke into the top 10, won two titles and collected two-runner-up trophies.

Call it fatigue, call it struggles with form, if things go like this for Bertens, she will soon find herself outside the top 10. Even in the Asian swing so far, her performance has been rather underwhelming. With a couple of opening-match defeats in Zhengzhou and Osaka to underdogs, the Dutch lack of ability to deliver in Asia is certainly troublesome.

The same was the story in Wuhan last week, when she fell in the third round to Aryna Sabalenka. So far in Beijing, however, she has managed to make some amends for those surprising losses. Starting with Donna Vekic in the opener, where she survived a major scare, Bertens then moved past Dayana Yastremska and Polona Hercog.

Business as Usual for Svitolina

Currently ranked World No. 3, Elina Svitolina has had quite a stunning year despite a lack of singles titles. What has helped her achieve this feat is her consistent performance on the tour. Having made it to the semifinals in six tournaments – all of them being Premier level and above, the Ukrainian has staked her claim as a top five player in a remarkable fashion.

Among her best results include the semifinal performance in the US Open and Wimbledon. In Asia, however, her form has taken a slight dip although, in comparison to Bertens, she is still miles ahead.

Playing in her fourth Asian tournament, Svitolina has reached the quarterfinal round in three of them, including this one in Beijing. She hasn’t faced that many difficulties so far as she moved past Anastasija Sevastova, Yafan Wang, and Sofia Kenin with some ease.

Svitolina v Bertens Tips & Predictions

Svitolina is going to start this match as the heavy favourite to win. Even though she is facing a formidable opponent, the Ukrainian’s tenacity and determination at the moment makes her a prime contender to win the China Open title this year.
