John Isner v Alex De Minaur Head to Head
The pair have only met once before on the hard courts of Atlanta last year where Isner won in straight sets.
Consistency Eludes the Big Hitting American Isner
The season started brightly for Isner with three back to back semi-final appearances as well as a run till the finals at Miami, eventually losing to Roger Federer. A month later, he went on to win the title at Newport Open as well. Since then, his season took a massive dip with him failing to pass round three in any of the seven tournaments he has played in.
With his loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas last week in Beijing, his chances to make it to the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals look thin. Despite this, the 34-year-old will be looking to gain some points this week since he did not play in Shanghai last year.
The American is in the top half of the draw where he potentially will meet world number one Novak Djokovic in the round of 16.
High Flying De Minaur Having a Spectacular Second Half of the Year
After a breakout 2018, De Minaur started this year with his maiden title in Sydney. He could not follow it up with a consistent form as multiple early-round exits followed. In the second half of the year, he has been mighty impressive with titles at Atlanta and at Zhuhai recently. He also reached the round of 16 at the US Open and achieved his career-high ranking 24 recently.
De Minaur is an Australian with dual nationality with Spain. Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt is his mentor, and observers find many similarities between the playing styles of both. De Minaur has an all-round game based around minimum errors and an excellent ability to retrieve.
He reached the round of 16 in Shanghai last year and will be hoping to at least match the performance this week.
John Isner v Alex De Minaur Predictions & Tips
A strong showing this week will practically seal De Minaur’s entry into Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan. Whereas Isner will need close to a miracle now to qualify for ATP World Tour Finals in London.
The Americal has the more potent game with a big serve and forehand, but an impressive form of De Minaur couple with Shanghai’s humidity tips the match in the Aussie’s favor.
Tip: De Minaur to progress to the second round. (888Sport)
