Latest ATP & WTA Rankings for October 7, 2019 – Osaka Grabs Number Three Spot, Millman Gains 22 Spots

With the Asian swing in full effect, this week say significant changes in rankings including a swap between numbers three and four on the WTA circuit.

In the WTA, there was some movement in the top 10. While Ashleigh still ranks at number one, Naomi Osaka has moved up to No.3 after her China Open championship win. US Open winner, Bianca Andreescu also moved up one rank to No.5. Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina both moved down one spot ranking at No.6 and No.4 respectively.

The top 30 rankings also saw many changes. Most significantly, Elise Mertens and Alison Riske both moved up four places ranking at No.19 and No.20 respectively. Riske had reached the finals at Wuhan and the round of 16 in Beijing. Jennifer Brady moved up ten places, Venus Williams moved up eight places, Christina McHale moved up nine places and Shuai Peng broke Top 100 ranking at 96.

Former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki dropped five places to rank at 24 who despite winning in Beijing last year lost out to Osaka in the semi-finals this year. Anastasija Sevastova, who didn’t get past the round of 64 in Beijing, dropped a staggering seven places to rank at 25. Shuai Zhang also dropped six places now ranking at 41.

In the ATP rankings, much like last week, there was no change in the top 10 rankings. But outside the Top 30, there were many significant changes. Reilly Opelka went up thirteen places to rank at 40 after he reached the semi-finals of Japan Open. Marin Cilic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga moved up five places ranking at 25 and 35 respectively.

Sam Querrey moved up ten places to rank at 45 after reaching the quarterfinals of the China Open but was defeated by Alexander Zverev.

Salvatore Caruso broke the top 100 after winning the Challenger Barcelona title and jumped up twelve places. John Millman moved twenty-two places after reaching the finals of the Japan Open which he lost to world No.1 Novak Djokovic.

Juan del Potro dropped out of the top 100 falling thirty-three places behind.

Propelling his comeback, former world No.1 Andy Murray moved up a staggering two hundred and fourteen places to rank at 289. Murray returned to tennis just a few months ago after recovering for a hip resurfacing surgery. He reached the quarterfinals of the China Open, the farthest he has gotten since his return to singles tennis.
