ATP European Open 2019 Preview: Wawrinka, Murray Add Glitter to the Lineup

The only ATP Tour tournament in Belgium, the European Open, will is set to feature former winners Richard Gasquet, who won the inaugural event in 2016 and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who won the subsequent year. And this tournament begins from October 14, 2019.

Gasquet, currently ranked at 52, last reached the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters but was defeated by David Goffin who is also confirmed to play in Antwerp. Gasquet won the Open in 2016 after defeating Diego Schwartzman but lost to Kyle Edmund last year in the semi-finals last year.

Schwartzman reached the quarter-finals of the US Open this year, losing out to the eventual champion Rafael Nadal. He reached the finals of the Los Cabos Open and the Argentina Open, the semi-finals of the Italian Open and Sydney International and the quarterfinals of the Queen’s Club Championships. Schwartzman currently ranks at 16. He has played against Gasquet three times, losing each time and will look to register his first win against the latter.

Tsonga, who has rested throughout the Asian swing, played last at the Open d’Orléans in France, reaching the semi-finals and losing to the eventual champion.

The four-time Metz winner won two titles consecutively this year, at the Moselle Open and the Cassis Open Provence. Tsonga also won the Open Sud de France early this year. He has played against Goffin 7 times and holds a 4-3 win record against him and a 5-4 win record against Gasquet.

Last year, Tsonga had an early exit from the tournament at the hands of Gael Monfils who is currently ranked world No.11. Monfils won his sole tournament of the year in Rotterdam. Last year, he reached the finals of the European Open, losing out to Edmund.

He reached the quarter-finals of the US Open this year but lost out to Berrettini. He reached the quarter-finals at Zhuhai, the Estoril Open, Indian Wells Masters and the semi-finals at the Dubai Championships and the Canadian Open. He has a 2-1 winning record over Schwartzman and a 10-7 winning record over Gasquet.

Former world No.1 Andy Murray will be playing in Antwerp this year. On his road to recovery from a hip resurfacing surgery, Murray has been playing a lot of tournaments consecutively before the end of this season to get his body used to play at this level. Murray had an impressive run, reaching the quarter-finals of the China Open, losing to the eventual champion, Dominic Thiem.

Currently ranked 289, Murray moved up an astounding 214 places in one week with his amazing performance in Asia. Murray has a 4-2 win record over Monfils, but the duo haven’t played against each other since 2014.

Other notable players in attendance are Milos Raonic, Frances TiafGuido Pella and three-time Grand Slam winner, Stanislas Wawrinka.

The European Open will commence on October 13 in Antwerp.
