Daniil Medvedev v Alexander Zverev Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, and Zverev has won on each occasion. Their first meeting came in 2016 at the St. Petersburg Open; then in 2017 they played each other in Washington; most recently, in 2018, they met in the Masters’ events in Miami and Rogers Cup.

Medvedev, Reaches Seventh Final of 2019

Medvedev is now into his seventh final of the year, and his sixth in the last three months, proving beyond a doubt that he is the man currently in form on the ATP tour. He was won three of them, the Opens in Sofia and St. Petersburg, and now has the chance to add a second Masters’ title to his CV, to go with the crown he won in Cincinnati. And that is without taking into account the fact that he was the beaten finalist in the US Open as well.

This has been another typical week for the 23 year old Russian, rising to the challenges as they present themselves, and he has got to this stage without dropping a set. Cameron Norrie of Great Britain was beaten easily in the second round; Vasek Pospisil of Canada was a little more hard work, as was Fabio Fognini of Italy, but, in each case, Medvedev stepped-up at the crucial moments to grab the advantage.

And, in his semi-final on Saturday, Stefanos Tsitsipas pushed him all the way in the first set, before the Russian won it on a tie-break. Then he forced the all-important break of serve in the second set which he consolidated to clinch victory.

Zverev, First Masters Final of 2019

This is Zverev’s third final of what has been a largely disappointing year for the German, by his own very high standards. He won in Geneva, but was beaten by Nick Kyrgios in Acapulco, a comparatively meagre return for the man who began the year as the World number three, tipped by many commentators as the man most likely to challenge the monopoly of the “Big Three” when it came to Grand Slams.

It is a mark of how much he has been affected by a loss of form and off-the-court issues that Friday’s win over Roger Federer was his first victory over another player in the top ten in 2019.

However, he followed that up with a comfortable straight sets win over the number eleven seed, Matteo Berrettini of Italy, in his semi-final on Saturday, breaking serve in each of the two sets, to make his first Masters final since Madrid last year>

Medvedev v Zverev Predictions & Tips

Medvedev is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 11/17, whilst Zverev is priced at 153/100. Zverev may have won their four previous encounters but, since they last met, Medvedev’s game has come on in leaps and bounds, and he is arguably playing the best tennis of anybody in the world right now.

Tip: Zverev to win in straight sets: 11/8 (888Sport)
