Fabio Fognini v Janko Tipsarevic Head to Head

The pair have met once before, back in New Haven in 2009, with Tipsarevic winning when the Italian was forced to retire with injury. However, they are now in very different stages of their career since that meeting.

Fognini Looking for Late Season Win

Fognini won his first Masters title in May at the age of 32 when he defeated another Serb, Dusan Lajovic, to clinch the crown in Monte Carlo. Since then the best he has managed has been three quarter-finals – in Los Cabos, Beijing, and then, last week, in Shanghai, where his progressed was halted by Daniil Medvedev.

A somewhat controversial figure who was ejected from the 2017 US Open for verbally abusing a match official, he continues to attract his fair share of unwanted headlines off the court. He was heavily fined in July for derogatory comments about Wimbledon, and got into a shouting match with Any Murray in Shanghai last week.

Seeded one for this event, he will regard this tournament as a chance to add another win to his list.

Tipsarevic, Injury Blighted Career

35-year old Tipsarevic was once ranked as high as eighth in the world, and had won 4 senior ATP singles’ titles. However, the fact that the last of those victories came in Chennai in 2013, tells its own story.

Since then he has seen his career blighted by injury, and he did not play at all in 2018.

Now ranked down at 251 in the world, he has played comparatively little in 2019, although he was able to enter all four Grand Slams due to his protected rankings. In each case though, he lost in the first round. His last tournament prior to Stockholm was the St. Petersburg Open where he was beaten in the first round, yet again, this time by the Bosnian Damir Dzumhur.

His comfortable first round victory over Corentin Moutet of France on Monday, was, therefore, as welcome as it was rare.

Fognini v Tipsarevic Predictions & Tips

Fognini is the clear favourite to win this match at 5/18, whilst Tipsarevic is priced at 13/4. Given his long recent history, it is rare for Tipsarevic to even feature in the second round of a tournament, but it would take a major upset for him to beat the Italian.

Tip: Fognini to win in straight sets: 4/6 (888Sport)
