Stan Wawrinka v Gilles Simon Head to Head

These have already played nine times against each other and Wawrinka’s lead is a narrow 5-4 one. Incidentally, their very first meeting came all the way back in 2003 on the Futures circuit and since then it’s been mostly at the ATP level. Interestingly, four of the five wins for Wawrinka have come on clay while it’s 4-1 in favour of Simon on hard court surfaces.

Wawrinka Hoping for a US Open Encore

Wawrinka, who is the fourth seed in the tournament, had a first round bye as a result. He was stretched to three thrilling sets by Feliciano Lopez in the first round and endured two tie-breakers to go with it.

That was his first match on the tour since he surprised a few people by making it to the quarter-final at the US Open earlier this year. Novak Djokovic’s injury was a factor but Wawrinka was leading by a couple of sets when the world number one had pulled the plug in that fourth round match at Flushing Meadows.

Why was that bit of a surprise was because before that, he had played four tournaments and didn’t win even two matches in a row. The good news for Wawrinka is that the last time he played on indoor courts, he made it to the final at Rotterdam earlier this year.

Simon Finally Getting Back on Track

A quarterfinalist at the Antwerp Open last year as well, the senior pro and 47th-ranked Simon enters the match having played 10 matches on indoor surfaces this year. His best result was a quarterfinal at Marseille before this but back to back straight-set wins over Steve Darcis and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in this tournament would have given him a huge boost.

In fact, since his quarterfinal at Eastbourne, Simon had played eight other tournaments and not made it to the last-eight stage even once. For a player who was a finalist at the Queen’s Club competition before that, this string of results would have come as bit of a surprise.

Part of it could be to do with his record on hard courts, which has generally been below-par but what’s darn surprising is his head to head against Wawrinka on these surfaces. Either ways, things could be slightly different in indoor courts.

Stan Wawrinka v Gilles Simon Predictions & Tips

Wawrinka, though a favourite, will be wary of his opponent who has beaten him four times on hard court surfaces. Which is also why despite being a favourite, he is only narrowly so. We could be looking at a three-setter here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 13/10 (888Sport)
