Keys, in a Do or Die Situation
Arriving in Zhuhai as one of the favourites to win the competition, Madison Keys has quickly slipped down the ladder and now finds herself facing a match that she needs to win. Following a rather impressive performance this season where she won two singles titles – the Charleston Open and Cincinnati Open, the American cemented her position in the top 15.
As a quarter-finalist in the French Open, she looked primed to crack the top 10 and for a short period, she did. However, following her fourth-round exit in the US Open, she fell to World No. 16 position. In Asia, she had a very uneventful time with early exits in Osaka and Beijing. On the whole, however, she has had a rather impressive year with a win-loss tally of 27-14.
In Zhuhai, she started her campaign with a straight-set loss against the local favourite Saisai Zheng. Now, Keys is set to face an opponent who has been in a rather good form this season with menacing runs.

Unlike Keys who will be playing this match under some pressure, this is the opening game for the 28-year-old Petra Martic. Currently ranked World No. 15 – her singles best ranking yet, she is coming into this match with a strike-rate of 34-16 – far superior to that of Keys’.
She made it to two singles final this season, going the distance in one of them in Istanbul. Then, a few weeks ago, she settled for the runner-up trophy in the Zhengzhou Open, succumbing to Karolina Pliskova in the final. In addition to this, Martic also reached the quarterfinal in the Madrid Open and French Open, and the fourth round in the US Open and Wimbledon.
With a healthy, consistent performance for most of the season, the Croat has looked rather impressive and determined. Nonetheless, she is not entirely invincible, having fallen to the likes of Sofia Kenin, Magda Linette, Katerina Siniakova, and others.
