Aryna Sabalenka v Elise Mertens Head to Head

They have played each other three times with Mertens leading the head to head 2-1. All of those three matches came last year and on different surfaces except indoor courts, and Sabalenka’s only win was on the grass of Eastbourne.

Sabalenka Gunning for Wuhan Extension

At one stage, it looked like Aryna Sabalenka’s season looked to be heading in a direction that might not have pleased her too much. She had started off the season with a title win at Shenzhen and reached a season-high of ninth in the world.

While those were early days of 2019, her form from the previous season and that early title victory looked to have propelled her with a chance to finish in the top eight and an entry into the WTA Finals. However, Sabalenka has struggled since then and it was only towards the last four weeks or so shown her class from the previous year.

At Wuhan last month, Sabalenka defeated Kiki Bertens, Ash Barty and Alison Riske to lift the title, her second in China this year and she would be hoping to make it a third at this one. For that though, she will need to thwart her doubles partner’s challenge.

Mertens Looking for US Open Form

Much like Sabalenka, Mertens did well in the first part of the season but has stumbled a tad since then. Her sole title win of the year, and the fifth of her career, came early on in Doha but since then she has made it to the semifinal of just one competition – losing at that last-four stage of the Osaka Open.

Mertens did win her opener here, beating Maria Sakkari in three sets but didn’t look as convincing as she could have and now is faced with the challenge of getting past her doubles partner to cement her place in the semifinal.

Some might argue she has a decent chance too given her head to head against Sabalenka but that was last year when both were in red-hot form – Mertens even more so than Sabalenka. While this season has been less kind to both players, Sabalenka’s late rendezvous with her form should help her more than her opponent.

Aryna Sabalenka v Elise Mertens Predictions & Tips

Sabalenka starts off a favourite in this one, and should be able to dominate her opponent from the word go. Expecting a straight-set win for the player from Belarus.

Tip: Sabalenka to win in straight sets: 7/5 at 888Sport
