Dominic Thiem v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

This will be the third match between Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini and both have won apiece. On clay, Thiem proved to be too good for Berrettini at the 2018 French Open, with the latter himself being a solid clay-courter, but Berrettini had his revenge earlier this year at the Shanghai Masters. The Italian won that in straight sets.

Thiem Gunning for the Fifth Title of the Season

Top seed at the tournament, Thiem has been on a fantastic run this month. He has a 9-1 win-loss record this month. Apart from his four titles this year, he has also reached the French Open final as well as the semi-finals at the Madrid Masters.

Having already secured his place in the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals, his next target would be to surpass Roger Federer in the rankings. The Swiss maestro is defending champion in Basel this week, and any slip-ups there and the Austrian can move close to Federer in terms of ranking points.

Thiem was leading Pablo Carren-Busta 5-0 in the first set of his quarterfinal before his opponent retired from the encounter, allowing him that extra rest heading into the semifinal.

Berrettini Getting Closer to a Spot in London

The 23-year-old Italian has had an impressive 2019 so far. Starting the year from outside of the top 50 in the rankings, he now finds himself on the verge of breaking into the top 10 as well as qualifying for the season-ending World Tour Finals in London.

Berrettini has been getting to the business end of the tournaments with regular consistency this season. Apart from his two titles on the tour and one at the Challange level, he has reached five further semi-finals. The list includes his magical run at the US Open, where he lost in the last four to the eventual champion, Rafael Nadal. He also reached the semis of Shanghai Masters a couple of weeks ago.

He goes into the match having won seven out of the last eight matches he has played in. Six of which were in straight sets. That includes a win over the highly-fancied Andrey Rublev in straight sets as well in his quarter-final, showing his tenacity at the tough points.

The Italian is just behind Alexander Zverev in the Race to London rankings, who lost in the first round of the Swiss Indoors. This means that a strong run this week in Vienna can see the Italian move past the German and practically seal his qualification to London.
