Kiki Bertens v Aryna Sabalenka Head to Head

Bertens holds a formidable 4-1 lead over Sabalenka and has already beaten the Belarussian twice this season, in the WTA Eastbourne and the St. Petersburg Cup. As for their last meeting, which took place in the Wuhan Open a few weeks ago, Sabalenka managed to finally get one over Bertens and eventually moved on to defend her title.

Bertens, in a Remarkable Form

Considering the year Kiki Bertens has had so far, it doesn’t come as a surprise to see her make it to yet another final. Having missed out on competing in the WTA Finals by just a few spots, she found herself as the top seed in the WTA Elite Trophy. Needless to mention, she has made the most of this opportunity.

She won her group without as much as batting an eye, dispatching Donna Vekic and Dayana Yastremska in straight sets. In the semifinal, she met the local favourite Saisai Zhang and defeated her 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. This marks Bertens’ fifth final of the season, having gone the distance in two of those. With Madrid Open and St. Petersburg Open under her belt, she will now look to seal the year with another classic title.

At the moment, the Dutch’s strike rate stands at 54-24 – one of the best ones on the circuit. Despite losing her form for a short while in the US Open Series and a couple of tournaments in Asia, she quickly found her groove and bounced back into the scene. In most of the events she has featured in, Bertens has pretty much moved on to reach the penultimate rounds. Combine that with her impressive victories over many top players, she is bound to start as a top favourite here.

Sabalenka’s Rise to Glory

Aryna Sabalenka has had a pretty remarkable season herself, mostly as a doubles player. However, her efforts to replicate some of that success on the singles circuit has been a feat in itself. Currently ranked Doubles No. 2, she won the Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, and US Open with Elise Mertens. She also reached the final in Wuhan, but fell to the pairing of Duan Yingying and Veronika Kudermetova.

Just like Bertens, she dominated her group with impressive victories over Mertens and Maria Sakkari. She now finds herself playing in her fourth singles final of the season. She won the title in Wuhan and Shenzhen, while in the Silicon Valley Classic, she had to settle for the runner-up trophy.

As for her consistency, it hasn’t really been her strong suit, given that her win-loss tally stands at 35-22. There have been numerous instances where she fell in the early rounds and consequently, slipped down in the rankings to the 14th place. Nonetheless, whenever she has performed, she has always been solid, leaving hardly any room for errors.

This is an evenly matched game but the odds are slightly in the favour of Bertens, given her recent momentum and overall form. However, it won’t be an easy match for her by any means. Expect a lot of quality shots and some mind-blowing tennis.
