Marin Cilic v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head
The two players have met twice on the tour, with both their meetings coming in big ticket events like the Roland Garros and US Open. Cilic won on both the occasions and now leads the head to head tally by 2-0.
Cilic, Looking for Some Reprieve in Paris
The season so far has been a disappointing one for the Croat, with constant form struggles practically keeping him out of the contention for big titles. With a strike rate of 21-17, Cilic is now ranked World No. 23. This also marks the first time that he is out of the top 15 for the first time in five years.
With a bunch of early exits marking his 2019 ATP season, the hope for him will be to get some traction in Paris and end the year within the top 20. Following a rather disastrous spell in the Asian Swing, he had a decent run in the Kremlin Cup where he reached the semifinal. With that exception of that tournament in Moscow, the 31-year-old has never quite made it past the fourth round on the circuit this year. His last tournament was the Swiss Indoors where he crashed in the first round.
It has been a challenging year for Cilic, to say the least. However, the two-time Grand Slam finalist has certainly got the skills to turn it all around.

Hurkacz, on a Good Run
In comparison to Cilic, the 22-year-old Hurkacz has had a far better season. Having clinched his maiden singles title of his career in the Winston-Salem Open, the Polish quickly broke into the top 40 with plans to move up even further.
However, just like his current adversary, consistency and form struggles plague Hurkacz as well. Following his title run, he moved on to lose in the first rounds in the US Open, Moselle Open, and ATP Tokyo. In the Shanghai Masters, however, he did manage to reach the third round after knocking out Gael Monfils but then, in Vienna, he succumbed to Karen Khachanov in the opener.
Among his highlights, there’s the quarter-final run in the Indian Wells Open where knocked out Kei Nishikori and Denis Shapovalov. He also won a challenger event in Canberra.

On any other day, this may have been a walk in the park for Cilic but given his recent form, expect him to run into troubles with Hurkacz. The young Polish is determined, menacing, and is coming into this fixture following a rather decent season by his standards.
