Ashleigh Barty v Naomi Osaka Head to Head
The head to head tally stands at 2-2 at the moment, with their last meeting taking place in the final of the China Open just a few weeks back. Osaka was the winner there in three sets, moving on to clinch her third title of the season.
Osaka, Coming in with a Lot of Momentum
With two back to back titles on the tour – China Open and the Japan Women’s Open, Naomi Osaka has certainly made up for her slow performance in the US Open Series and the weeks before that. Following her fantastic run at the Australian Open where she clinched the title, her form dipped slightly although, she was still in the top five.
If anything, her performance wasn’t abysmal – it was just the increased competition on the tour, combined with her early exits in the penultimate rounds. With the sole exception of grass tournaments, Osaka has pretty much moved on to reach the fourth round and beyond in plenty of competitions.
Her run in Beijing was particularly impressive as she defeated the likes of Bianca Andreescu, Alison Riske, and Caroline Wozniacki to reach the final. That was nothing short of a statement. Even in Shenzhen, she has been ruthless as usual, starting her campaign for the WTA Finals title with a win over Petra Kvitova.

For Ashleigh Barty, the season so far has been absolutely brilliant, to say the least. With a strike rate of 52-11 and three singles titles, she has cemented her position as World No. 1.
The cricketer-turned-tennis star won the Miami Open, French Open, and the Birmingham Classic, along with reaching the final in Sydney and Beijing. With trophies from five big tournaments and a litany of incredible victories over some of the best players, it wouldn’t be surprising if she manages to go the distance here in Shenzhen.
So far, things have been good for her as she started off with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win over Belinda Bencic in the opening round.
