Simona Halep v Elina Svitolina Head to Head
The tally currently stands at 4-4 at the moment, with Halep winning their last two meetings on the tour. Both of those came this season itself, in the semifinal of WTA Doha and the French Open. Svitolina herself has also been pretty impressive in their past meetings, most notably in their WTA Finals meeting in 2017.
Svitolina, the Defending Champion
Svitolina’s attempts to defend her WTA Finals title in Shenzhen have been off to a great start so far. In the opening match, she met the Czech No. 1 Karolina Pliskova and defeated her in straight-sets with 7-6(14), 6-4.
Having qualified for the tournament just in nick of the time, the Ukrainian has now got herself one last chance to win a title this season. Despite a pretty impressive performance by all standards – reaching the semifinal at the Wimbledon and the US Open, she never really quite managed to go the distance. Nonetheless, these penultimate runs have helped her stay afloat in the top eight.
The number eight seed enjoyed a similar run in the Asian Swing too, with back to back quarterfinal appearances in Zhengzhou, Wuhan, and Beijing. With a strike-rate of 35-21 at the moment, the Ukrainian may certainly seem to be the weakest player in the draw, at least statistically speaking. But given her experience and abilities, all of that can change in a match.

Starting her journey in Shenzhen against the Canadian prodigy Bianca Andreescu, Simona Halep soon found herself in an epic battle of the plays. While she ultimately won the match 3-6, 7-6(8), 6-4, it wasn’t until she managed to save a match point and fend off the Canadian. Without a doubt, it was most of the most thrilling matches for the Halep this season and with that win, she has made a statement.
Despite getting overwhelmed in the first set, the Romanian managed to dig into her experience and find her way back to the glory. The Wimbledon Champion, who is currently World No. 5, arrived in Shenzhen after a rather mediocre performance in the Asian Swing and US Open Series.
However, she had a much better time in the first half of the season, where she won the title at the SW19 and reached the final in Madrid and Doha. Additionally, she also found herself in the penultimate rounds on many instances, cementing her position in the top five.

Expect Halep to win this one – the kind of ferocity she displayed against Andreescu is something unseen in quite some time. However, it won’t be an easy match for her and she may have to fight harder, this time around.
