Rafael Nadal v Adrian Mannarino Predictions & Preview

Given that both are veterans on the tour, surprisingly Rafael Nadal and Adrian Mannarino have only met once. That was on the hard courts of Beijing, where Nadal won in straight sets.

It has been another stellar year for Nadal. Having won the French & US Opens, bringing his slam count to 19 titles, he was also the finalist at the Australian Open, and a Wimbledon finalist. Nadal also won the Rome and Montreal Masters 1000 titles, and currently ranked number two in the world, has a more than realistic chance of overtaking Novak Djokovic to be the year end world number one. Returning from a wrist injury as well as from his wedding, Nadal will be looking to hit peak form, both here and at the Tour Finals in London.

Adrian Mannarino who has been the tour for most of the decade, has had a strong last year and a half.  He reached a career high number 22 last year and is currently ranked number 43 in the ATP rankings. Winner of his first ATP title this year, at the Rosmalen grass court championships, he was also a finalist in recent weeks at the Zhuhai and Kremlin Cup ATP 250 tournaments. Playing in front of his home crowd, the Frenchman will look to end his season on a positive note.

It is difficult to see Mannarino cause a lot of trouble to Nadal, despite the conditions and the crowd; expect Nadal to win in straight sets.

Tip: Nadal to win in two sets.

Stanislas Wawrinka v Marin Cilic Predictions & Preview

This will be the 15th meeting between the two players and the Swiss, Wawrinka, holds a formidable 12-2 lead in the head-to-head.

It has been a disappointing season for former world number three Marin Cilic, who has typically been a top ten player for a few years now. The 2014 US Open champion has had a season of injury and shock losses, and is now ranked just within the top 25. Comfortable and usually at his best on the faster surfaces, Cilic has not managed to get momentum this year on any particular surface. The Croat will desperately be hoping to end the year on a positive note, and look for a reversal of fortunes in 2020. Cilic looked strong in his first round opener against young Hubrert Hurkacz, and will look to carry the form forward. A win against a player of the stature of Wawrinka maybe exactly what he needs to turn his season around.

In his 14th appearance at Basel last week Wawrinka won a tight pre-quarterfinal against Frances Tiafoe and then had to withdraw from the quarterfinal against Roger Federer due to back concerns, that seem to have subsided by now. After injuries marred good portions of 2017 and 2018 for the former world number three, he has been on the comeback trail this year. Being a finalist at Antwerp last week, and Rotterdam earlier in the year, he has also made the quarter-finals at the French and US Open this year and is back in the top 20 in the world.

A clash of former world number threes; although both aren’t in the best of form, expect a tight match with Wawrinka winning in a decider.

Tip: Wawrinka to win in three sets.

Dominic Thiem v Milos Raonic Predictions & Preview

This is the fourth meeting between Milos Raonic and Dominic Thiem. While Thiem won earlier this year at Indian Wells, Raonic was victorious in 2017 at the ATP Tour Finals as well as Cincinnati Masters, both in 2016.

After a strong start to the year, and a convincing run on the clay, Dominic Thiem’s season took a dip with early losses at Wimbledon and the US Open. The Austrian has since made a good comeback, with an 11-1 win-loss record in the last month. He won the China Open at Beijing, was a quarter-finalist at the Masters 1000 in Shanghai and followed it with a title last week at the ATP 500 in Vienna last week. With five titles to his name this year, Thiem leads the title count for the season.

Former world number three and Wimbledon finalist, Milos Raonic, has been plagued with injuries over the last two seasons. After an Australian Open quarter-finals showing, and being a semi-finalist at Indian Wells, Raonic has had to miss sections of the year, including the US Open due to injuries and never really got his season going with any sort of momentum. He will be hoping to maintain fitness through this week and use the faster surface to suit his big serving game, just as he did in his opener here against Cameron Norrie.

Expect a powerful battle between two very contrasting playing styles. If Thiem is fresh and not fatigued by the deep runs of recent weeks, expect him to win this 2 tight sets.

Tip:  Thiem to win in straight sets.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Matteo Berrettini  Predictions & Preview

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Matteo Berrettini meet for the first time in their career, here at the ATP Paris Masters 1000.

It has been a very impressive second half of the year for Berrettini. He has entered the top 10 of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career this week. Winner of two ATP 250 titles this year, runner-up at  another, and semi-finalist at the US Open and the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai, the young Italian is currently eighth in the race to qualify for the ATP Tour Finals next month in London. Berrettini continued his good form last week, being a semi-finalist at the Vienna ATP 500, and will look to doing so here again.

Former world number five, French veteran Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has been on the comeback from a long injury lay-off. While he is yet to reach the heights that he did earlier in his career, the Frenchman has done well to win titles in Montpellier and Moselle, as he continues to remain a force on the faster surfaces. With the home crowds and familiar conditions, the 2008 Paris Masters champion did well in his opener against the in-form young Russian Andrey Rublev to come back to win in a decider.

This should be a very interesting match, with both players having a lot to play for. Not easy to pick a winner here, but Berrettini may just scrape through in three sets.

Tip: Berrettini to win in three sets.
