Alexander Zverev v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

This has been a one-sided rivalry with Zverev leading 3-0 including the Laver Cup meeting last year.

Zverev Inching Closer To London

Alexander Zverev is one step closer to returning to Nitto ATP Finals – the scene of his biggest triumph of his fledgling tennis career. The sixth seed to a massive step when he breezed past Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco in straight sets to reach the third round of the Paris Rolex Masters.

The young German added 90 points in his tally in the Race, and at this juncture, he can guarantee himself a place in the season-ending finale next month if he makes the Paris final. He could still qualify to defend his crown if he exits the tournament before the final, but that would largely depend on results from the other London contenders. So it is fair to assume, Zverev will want this opportunity to be firmly in his racket.

The 22-year-old has won just one title this season (ATP 250 in Geneva) and has managed a 39-21 record for the year which is usually a decent return for most players. But those numbers are significantly below par for Zverev considering he broke the 50-win mark in each of the last two seasons.

Shapovalov Back to Winning Ways

Denis Shapovalov overcame a hangover following his maiden title at the Stockholm Open a fortnight ago. After losing to Carreno Busta in Vienna last week, he has returned to winning ways at the Paris Masters. He benefited from a first round retirement from Gilles Simon before earning a confidence-boosting win over mercurial Italian Fabio Fognini.

With that win, he scored his first top-15 win since March and subsequently ended Fognini’s hopes of qualifying for London. Should he be victorious again, he could extinguish the hopes of another contender on Thursday.

It goes without saying this season has been Shapovalov’s career-best year on tour in terms of results and titles. Granted it had taken him a while to reach the top of the tree especially when you consider a few of his contemporaries have won a title or two, the Canadian did not lose his composure or let the hype affect his performances.
