Rafael Nadal v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

It was at the 2007 Australian Open that Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka played each other for the first time and the Spaniard won that in straight sets. Since then, they have met a total of 22 times and Nadal holds a 19-3 advantage (18-3 not counting exhibition matches), with those three wins having come in a stretch of 15 or so months between 2014 and 2015.

Nadal Takes His Time in Second Round

While Nadal won in straight sets against Adrian Mannarino, it wasn’t as straightforward as it could have been. He was playing in his first competitive match since winning the US Open – although Laver Cup fans might disagree with that – and while he took a bit of time to get going, the Spaniard wrapped up the match 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the third.

Nadal wasted three set-points in the opening set before edging out his opponent and while the second set went on serve till 4-4, it needed the Spaniard just a bit of an opening to finish off the encounter.

And the Spaniard, who had won his only match at the Laver Cup against Milos Raonic, will now look to up the ante against an opponent who has turned his career around in the last few months. Nadal holds the obvious advantage over Wawrinka but it would be interesting to see if the lack of match practice goes against him.

Wawrinka Stretched but Satisfied after Back Issue

Stan Wawrinka had to pull out of his match against Roger Federer at the Swiss Indoors because of a back injury but one look at his recent form and it’s easy to know why this could be a challenge for Nadal. After making it to the final at the European Open – where he lost to Andy Murray, another player making a comeback – he won back to back matches to set up that Federer meeting.

Even here at the Paris Masters, Wawrinka opened with a first round bye and then defeated Marin Cilic in straight sets, albeit in two tie-breakers, suggesting his fitness issues are behind him now.

There is a side point here to Wawrinka’s campaign here. For someone who was ranked 263rd in the world last season, having fallen down the charts because of an injury, Wawrinka now has a very outside chance of making the ATP Finals. He needs to win this match on his way to the title at the Paris Masters to make it through and while that looks seeming improbable it speaks volumes about the Swiss player’s mental reserves.

He will need a ton of those against Nadal.
