Elina Svitolina v Bianca Andreescu Head to Head

The two players have met only once on the tour, in the 2019 Indian Wells earlier this season. Andreescu, with a menacing run, won that match in three sets and now leads 1-0 in the head to head tally.

Svitolina, 2 for 2 in Shenzhen

Even though the Ukrainian has been awarded the last seed for the tournament, she hasn’t let that deter her from putting up a commanding performance. Looking to defend her WTA Finals title, she has so far convincingly defeated Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep in straight sets. The 25-year-old has already qualified for the semifinal and looks highly spirited to go the distance.

While she hasn’t won a singles title yet this season, Svitolina has done a fantastic job of staying afloat in the top eight. She reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the Wimbledon and the US Open. She had similar runs in Indian Wells, WTA Dubai, and Doha as well. Combine that with a few of her other quarterfinal runs, we have got ourselves a player with a strike-rate of 35-21 and a litany of top 10 wins.

However, before arriving in the town for the year-end championships, Svitolina was knocked out in the first round of the Kremlin Cup – a shocking defeat that came at the hands of Veronika Kudermetova. That defeat marked one of the rare instances this season where she fell in the early stages of a tournament.

Worrying Times for Andreescu

Bianca Andreescu, the 19-year-old Canadian who became World No. 4, after starting the season outside the top 150, now finds herself battling a serious injury situation. The US Open Champion, with a win-rate of 48-5, was forced to retire from her match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday with a knee injury.

It is yet to be known whether she will take the court on Friday, pending further checks. The pain was evident but her spirited wanted to continue. However, her practically-immobile leg said otherwise and she had to retire. This was to be a must-win match for the Canadian, who earlier lost her opening game in Shenzhen to Halep.

This isn’t the second time that Andreescu finds herself troubled by injuries. She missed a good few months of the tour owing to a rotor cuff injury, but when she returned, she was unstoppable. The number four seed won the Rogers Cup and moved on to conquer the Flushing Meadows. But this time around, her injury appears to be far more serious.

Svitolina v Andreescu Predictions & Tips

If Andreescu decides to go ahead with the match, she will start as the underdog. With a poor run in Shenzhen and practically, already out of the tournament, it may be difficult for her to muster some spirit. On the other hand, Svitolina will be looking for an absolute whitewash. All in all, should be a good game.
