Ashleigh Barty v Karolina Pliskova Head to Head

Overall the two have met on five previous occasions, with Barty having a 3-2 lead over the Czech. The only time they met in 2019 was at the final in Miami, which the Aussie won 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 to claim her maiden premier mandatory title.

Barty Ending Year on a High

Having won a tough three-setter against Belinda Bencic, which ensured her a year-end No. 1 ranking, Barty suffered a shock defeat against first alternate Kiki Bertens in the next match that threw the Red Group wide open.

With all four women in contention for the two semifinal spots on the final day of the group’s round-robin matches, Barty knew exactly what she had to do, as she came out all guns blazing against No. 6 Petra Kvitova, ending the Czech’s campaign with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win and sealing a place in the semis as the group winner.

This has been a breakthrough year for the 23-year-old Aussie, who won her first grand slam at Roland Garros along with two other WTA titles in Miami and Birmingham. She also has two runner-up finishes, one in Sydney and the other at the China Open last month, and is hoping to finish the year on a high, by winning the season-ending tournament in her first attempt.

But standing between her and Sunday’s final will be the 6’1’’ Czech, who will be looking to win her fifth title of the year.

Pliskova Sees off Halep

Pliskova began her campaign in Shenzhen with a tough 6-7 (12-14), 4-6 defeat to defending champion Elina Svitolina. She was looking good against Bianca Andreescu, leading the U.S. Open champion 6-3, before the Canadian retired, making Pliskova’s last match of the round robin stage against Simona Halep a virtual quarterfinal. The winner was assured of a semifinal spot as the Purple Group runner-up while the loser went home.

The Czech looked in great touch as she bageled Halep in the first set on Friday. The World No. 5, however, staged a comeback in the second, taking the set 2-6, before getting an early break in the third and going up 0-2. With her back against the wall, Pliskova rallied to take the set 6-4 and seal a semifinal spot.

Pliskova made it to the last four in the 2018 WTA Finals as well, and looked in complete control in that match after she bageled Sloane Stephens in the first set, but the American recovered remarkably to end the Czech’s campaign in three sets.

The World No. 2 was also in the semifinals of the tournament in 2017 and would be desperate to go one better this year.
