Novak Djokovic v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before. and Djokovic has won each time, with all three matches coming this year – at the Australian Open, the Rome Masters, and the Shanghai Masters just last month.

Djokovic Set for Fifth Paris Title

If Djokovic wins on Sunday it will be his fifth title in Paris, and his 34th in Masters series events, which is a record. Perhaps more importantly, with Rafael Nadal’s retirement from his warm-up with Shapovalov with injury, it increases his chances of ending the year holding the coveted number one spot in the world rankings.

Certainly, until his semi-final with Grigor Dimitrov on Saturday, he had not really been pushed in France this week. He began his week with comfortable victories over Corentin Moutet of France, and then Kyle Edmund of Great Britain, before demolishing the world number seven, Stefanos Tsitsipas in their quarter final, with the Greek player mustering only three games in a match that lasted less than an hour.

Dimitrov, now ranked 27 in the world, though, pushed him hard, matching him shot by shot in the first set, which went to a tie-break before the Serb finally got his nose in front. The second was also tight, but Djokovic secured a valuable service break which he consolidated to wrap up victory in an hour and 38 minutes.

Shapovalov’s First Masters Final

This is the first Masters final for Shapovalov, although he would have much preferred to have earned it on the court, rather than by luck. However, Nadal’s injury in the warm-up means that he advanced to the final against Djokovic without having to hit a shot in anger in their semi-final.

However, how he got there will be forgotten by the history books, which will record the fact that he can rank this achievement alongside his first ATP singles title at the Swedish Open this week.

It also will be a pity if Shapovalov is regarded as an accidental finalist, as that will obscure what he has done to get here in Paris this week, having previously beaten three seeded players in a row – Fabio Fognini, Alexander Zverev, and Gael Monfils.

Djokovic v Shapovalov Predictions & Tips

Djokovic is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 1/8, whilst Shapovalov is priced at 27/4. Unfortunately the Nadal injury has robbed tournament organisers, and tennis fans, the showdown with Djokovic they would have been looking forward to, and it is hard to see the young Canadian challenging the Serb in the same way his old foe would have done.

Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 4/11 at 888Sport
